Crew Member Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was buried under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also comprised leaders in multiple disciplines.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
