Dallas Cowboys Owner Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Fans

The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal directed at attendees during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“It was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”

Historical Context for Proprietor Penalties

This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples involve:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
  • Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty easily payable for the wealthy owner.

Recent Issues and Public Spotlight

The incident follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star pass rusher Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his role in building the Dallas franchise into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its modern-era title shortcomings.

The NFL’s action to penalize Jones underscores its continuing effort to uphold professional conduct among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their position or wealth.
