The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
