Over 20 Olympic medal winners, mentors and further global sports figures have put their names to a statement urging a stop to the death penalty of a boxing titleholder and instructor, who is on death row in the nation.

Increasing Global Anger

Amid growing global condemnation over the country's escalating use of executions as a tool of suppression, the powerfully expressed statement censures the authorities's decision to maintain the capital punishment of the athlete.

The boxer, 30, from the city in north-east Iran, was arrested for taking part in national uprisings in two thousand nineteen and accused of supporting an dissident organization. He has passed 60 months in incarceration, where he has been abused and kept in solitary confinement.

The appeal said that the boxer's case was not an isolated one and highlighted Iran’s record of executing athletes for their views, including Habib Khabiri, leader of the football side, and a volleyball captain, leader of the national women’s volleyball team. Additional supporters to the letter include a sailing champion, who led the pioneering female-only team in a global yacht race and was the pioneering lady to be awarded a prestigious sailing award; the previous skipper of the Australian football team an athlete; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the country's selection for the international competition.

Apprehension and Unfair Trial

The athlete was arrested in March 2020. The accusations against him comprised “causing deterioration on Earth through arson and ruin of state assets”. His ruling has been reversed multiple times but on the fourth of October it was upheld on the third attempt. His legal proceedings was criticized as “grossly unfair” by advocates and organizations.

Urging to United Nations

The call to halt the boxer's death sentence follows a previous appeal to the United Nations official for human rights, backed by more than a hundred advocates and entities, urging intervention to prevent the athlete’s execution.

Capital Punishment Escalation

Based on reports, there is an “death penalty surge in the nation, which has achieved shocking proportions”.
