The megacity Rises to Dangerous Pollution Following Festival of Lights
On Tuesday morning residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves breathing dangerously toxic air that registered in the "critical" category.
Alarming Air Quality Measurements
Several parts of Delhi recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents ten times the healthy limit recommended by the WHO.
In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1800, equating to 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable limits.
Firecracker Restrictions and Recent Changes
Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that blankets the city as colder weather begins.
However recently, the recently formed city administration approached the highest court to seek a relaxation of the restrictions.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a balance between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Judicial Verdict and Implementation
To the disappointment of environmental and health campaigners, judges agreed to the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the festival.
Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable flouting of the designated hours across the metropolis, with little monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Several recording stations throughout the capital showed pollution reaching highest levels around the night hours to extremely hazardous levels observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.
Cross-Border Effects
The widespread use of fireworks during the celebrations also initiated a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on hazardous particles traveling from India following the events.
Chronic Pollution Crisis
Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the city have persisted as a serious issue for fifteen-plus years, with the situation showing no improvement.
Near Diwali, the concentration of toxic particles in the air has been found to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the most severe readings ever measured in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.
Multiple Contamination Contributors
The problem in the capital is attributed to a mix of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, building projects, rubbish burning and smoke from agricultural fires in nearby regions of Punjab and Haryana.
In these regions, agricultural workers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the city as cooler air descends.
Medical and Economic Toll
Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the Delhi area is enormous, according to multiple studies.
This pollution results in increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can potentially cause cancer.
The pollution is calculated to be causing approximately 10k early deaths annually in Delhi.
